Birmingham City have revealed the design for a 62,000-seater stadium that will be the centrepiece of the Sports Quarter and it will be called ‘The Powerhouse’.

The stadium design was unveiled at Digbeth Loc. Studios on Thursday afternoon by Blues chairman Tom Wagner, Bluenose and film director Steven Knight and Heatherwick Studios architect Eliot Postma.

Knight prepared a film for guests to reveal the stadium that included cameos from minority investor Tom Brady, Real Madrid and England superstar Jude Bellingham and Peaky Blinders actor Paul Anderson.

The design, which is a collaboration between architects from Heatherwick Studios and US-based MANICA with assistance from Knight on a consultancy basis, features chimneys – 12 to be exact – all around the outside of a modern centre that brings Birmingham’s history to the 21st century.

There were gasps in the crowd as the stadium was unveiled before a rendition of Keep Right On was played around the room.

Wagner has set the ambitious target of building the stadium by 2030 and the next stage is to get planning permission for a complex that is expected to be around 135 acres.
