These two Cape Cod hotels named ‘icons’ by Forbes. Can you guess which ones?

Erosion continues along Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, threatening shore

Town Neck Beach in Sandwich continues to loose sand from erosion after a $10M replenishment in January, with sand was dredged from the Cape Cod Canal.

Two Cape Cod hotels were among only six U.S. hotels recognized as Forbes’ 2025 Hotel Icons, a new list of the world’s “most legendary five-star hotels.”

Chatham Bars Inn and Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, waterfront hotels in Chatham and Harwich respectfully, were two of 23 hotels that made the list. Forbes chose hotels based on a history of over 100 years of continuous operation under the same name and a Five-Star rating.

“We are delighted to be recognized as one of Forbes Travel Guide’s Icon Hotels,” said Claudio Togo, managing director of Chatham Bars Inn, in a statement. “This honor recognizes the resort’s storied past and celebrates a legacy spanning more than a century of dedicated service and outstanding hospitality by the Chatham Bars Inn team. The resort remains a timeless symbol of Cape Cod luxury, welcoming guests back year after year.”

These are not the hotels’ first honors: Earlier this year, the Chatham Bars Inn was named one of the best resorts for a waterfront stay in the country by USA TODAY’s 2025 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards, and both were included in Conde Nast’s top 20 resorts in New England.

Other Forbes honorees include the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam and Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

Why did Forbes choose the Chatham Bars Inn?

This is what Forbes said about Chatham Bars Inn:

“A Cape Cod institution, Chatham Bars Inn was a pioneer when it opened in 1914. It had an onsite farm long before farm-to-table cuisine became a restaurant trend, soundproofed accommodations and private bathrooms featuring fresh and saltwater baths. The family-owned hotel’s amenities and prized 25-acre waterfront location drew prominent guests such as Henry Ford, William Rockefeller Jr. and Princess Juliana of the Netherlands (who stayed there in the summer during her World War II exile).”

Why did Forbes choose the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club?

Here’s what Forbes said about the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club:

“Cape Cod’s Wequassett marked its centennial this year by unveiling a $12 million renovation of its charming 113 guest rooms, villas and cottages, giving them a modern coastal aesthetic. Elsewhere at the seasonal beachfront hotel, guests can enjoy three tennis courts, three pickleball courts, two outdoor heated pools, six restaurants and bars, a water sports center, access to the Cape Cod National Golf Club and Twenty-Eight Atlantic, the area’s only Five-Star restaurant.”

What other US hotels made the Forbes list?

  • The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs
  • St. Regis New York, New York
  • Weekapaug Inn, Rhode Island
