Two Moderate Earthquakes Hit Pakistan and Afghanistan Overnight

Two moderate-intensity earthquakes struck Pakistan and Afghanistan in the early hours of Friday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The first tremor, measuring magnitude 4.2, was recorded at 1:59 am IST with its epicentre in Afghanistan at a depth of 190 km. It was located at 36.45°N latitude and 70.45°E longitude, according to NCS. “EQ of M: 4.2, On: 21/11/2025 01:59:13 IST, Lat: 36.45 N, Long: 70.45 E, Depth: 190 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the NCS posted on X.

A second, stronger earthquake of magnitude 5.2 hit Pakistan at 3:09 am IST. The quake occurred at a depth of 135 km near 36.12°N latitude and 71.51°E longitude. “EQ of M: 5.2, On: 21/11/2025 03:09:12 IST, Lat: 36.12 N, Long: 71.51 E, Depth: 135 Km, Location: Pakistan,” the NCS posted on X.

Further, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 was also recorded in the Indian Ocean region at around 2:41 am. “EQ of M: 4.3, On: 21/11/2025 02:41:20 IST, Lat: 3.00 N, Long: 95.58 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Indian Ocean.,” the NCS said.

Afghanistan, Pakistan Hit By Spate Of Quakes Recently

The Pakistan-Afghanistan region, which lies at the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, has experienced a spate of earthquakes in recent years.

November 2025 – Earlier this month, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif, killing at least seven people and injuring about 150.

August 2025- An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 has struck Afghanistan just before midnight on August 31. It was followed by a series of strong aftershocks over the week, killing more than 2000 people and injuring thousands.

Earthquakes ranging from 5 to 5.7 have hit Pakistan earlier this year. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck central Pakistan on June 29. A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Pakistan on May 10. A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Pakistan on April 12.
