Quake sends Dhaka residents rushing outdoors, felt nationwide

An earthquake jolted Dhaka and several regions across Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending residents rushing outdoors in panic.

Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told New Age that the quake, felt at around 10:38am, measured 5.7 in magnitude and had its epicentre in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi area.
The United States Geological Survey, however, reported a magnitude of 5.5, with the epicentre located about 14 kilometres west-southwest of Narsingdi.
In the capital, many residents said they felt a strong jolt lasting a few seconds, causing high-rise buildings to sway. People evacuated homes, offices and commercial buildings as a precaution.
No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were available.
