Tremors in Kolkata, Northeast India after 5.5 magnitude earthquake near Dhaka

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck near the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Friday, with tremors being felt in Kolkata and several parts of Northeast India, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicentre was situated in Narsingdi, about 50 km from Dhaka and the depth of the quake was 10 km, the USGS said. No reports of damage, casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

In Kolkata, several people experienced tremors around 10:10 am for a few seconds, forcing them to rush out of their homes and buildings in panic.

Many social media users shared videos showing the moment when tremors were felt in Kolkata.

Tremors were also felt in other parts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar, and Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur.

Several residents also reported experiencing tremors in cities such as Guwahati, Agartala and Shillong.

The earthquake also briefly disrupted the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka. The game resumed after a few minutes and no damage was reported.
