South Australian schoolies festival gets under way

Victor Harbor is currently hosting thousands of school leavers celebrating the end of their secondary education at the annual schoolies festival.

The event, a traditional rite of passage for South Australian graduates, has drawn approximately 4000 attendees this year.

Celebrations commenced early, with many arriving via free buses from Adelaide.

Authorities have implemented increased security measures, including expanded police powers within a designated event precinct, aimed at ensuring the safety of participants.

These powers allow officers to conduct searches for weapons using metal detectors.

“South Australian Police have declared Schoolies Festival a declared event precinct, so they will be on hand like they are every year to support our young people to stay safe across the weekend,” Nigel Knowles from Encounter Youth said.

Encounter Youth is hosting the Schoolies 2025 carnival tonight, featuring sideshow alley rides and games. Hundreds of volunteers are also present to assist throughout the weekend.

However, the usual beach activities are restricted due to the state’s algal bloom.
