The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has selected the distinctive Croatia Airlines aircraft tail design as one of the leading examples of industrial design to be featured in its prestigious publication A Century of Design Registration 1925–2025.
The edition marks the centenary of the Hague Agreement, which established the international system for registering industrial designs.
Presented in Geneva this November, the publication showcases one hundred carefully chosen designs registered through the Hague System.
Among them is Croatia Airlines’ Aircraft tail pattern (DM/220 719), a design originally created in 2004 by Ivana Ivanković and refreshed in 2024.
The design offers a contemporary interpretation of the iconic Croatian chequerboard, transforming the national symbol into a dynamic, modern motif that gives the airline a recognisable identity both on the ground and in the sky.

In its commentary, WIPO highlights the design’s ability to balance heritage with forward-looking creativity.
The publication notes that its evolution “meets precision with symbolism, and structure with spirit”, emphasising how the tail pattern gives Croatia Airlines an instantly recognisable presence at home and abroad. It also praises the way the design demonstrates that “even movement itself can become a form of national expression”.

Featured across two pages alongside accompanying photographs, the Croatia Airlines tail stands out as a significant acknowledgement of the strength of Croatian design in a global context.
The recognition also reinforces the airline’s ongoing commitment to merging tradition with modernity, uniting national identity with design innovation.
