Eurovision announces new rules in response to ‘Israeli meddling’

There were demonstrations against Israel’s involvement in the contest before her late surge up the rankings to finish behind Austria’s act JJ and his song Wasted Love.

A wave of countries raised concerns over the results.

Irish broadcaster RTE requested a breakdown in voting numbers from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises the contest, while Spain’s public broadcaster, Radio Television Espanola (RTVE), called for a “complete review” of the voting system.

Belgium’s VRT, the Flemish public broadcasting company, also demanded an investigation.

In September, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia all threatened to boycott Eurovision 2026 – unless Israel was excluded from the competition over its war in Gaza.

Hosts Austria and Germany threatened to quit if Israel was thrown out, as Russia was after the invasion of Ukraine, throwing the future of the competition in doubt.

An emergency vote on Israel’s participation was due to take place in November, but it was cancelled following the ceasefire in Gaza. Israel is expected to compete in the next contest.
