It’s been a dream start for Michigan State basketball this year.
Just four games into the 2025-26 season, Tom Izzo’s squad has two marquee victories over top SEC squads.
On Tuesday, the Spartans shocked the college basketball world by blowing the doors off Kentucky in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York, 83-66, which included a barrage of 3-pointers from a team that hasn’t been able to hit the broadside of the barn from behind the arc.

The Spartans finished the game 11-for-22 on 3-pointers and even if they aren’t always that hot from deep, showing they’re capable of knocking them down at a high rate really raises the ceiling for this team.
Can they keep it up, though?
That’ll be the test on Friday night against Detroit Mercy, a squad led by former longtime MSU assistant Mark Montgomery.
Montgomery is in his second year leading the Titans, who went 8-24 last year and are off to just a 1-4 start this season. But that doesn’t mean MSU can take Detroit Mercy lightly.
This will be one of the biggest games on the schedule for not just Montgomery, but the whole Titans squad, who has a chance to prove something against a top-25 team who is already off to a hot start.
