Pacers sign former Celtics guard to 10-day contract

The Pacers are set to sign free agent wing Garrison Mathews to a 10-day contract using a hardship exception according to Michael Scotto of Hoopshype.
Mathews spent the last three seasons with the Hawks but was one of the last cuts from the Knicks roster this year, losing out to Landry Shamet for one of the team’s final spots. Mathews also had a stint with the Celtics during the 2021 preseason but he was one of the team’s final cuts that year before going on to sign a deal with the Rockets.
Mathews, 29, has averaged 38.2 percent shooting from 3-point range during his six-year NBA career, making appearances with the Wizards, Rockets and Hawks.
Indiana has lost several key players to injury to begin the year on top of All-Star Tyrese Haliburton. Obi Toppin (foot), Aaron Nesmith (knee) and Kam Jones (back) are all expected to miss several more weeks, creating a hardship exception for Indiana to use on Mathews. The team is also signing Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to a two-year deal and waiving Monte Morris as part of the roster shuffling.
The defending Eastern Conference champions have started the year with a 2-13 record but are starting to get some injured players back. Bennedict Mathurin and TJ McConnell both returned to the court this week and helped lead the Pacers to a win on Wednesday night over the Hornets.
Mathews will have a chance to make his Indiana debut on Friday when the Pacers face off against the Cavs in Cleveland.
