Julianne Hough Reflects on Challenging Experience Dancing with Ex-Boyfriend Chuck Wicks on DWTS

Julianne Hough recently reflected on her past experience dancing with her then-boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, on “Dancing With the Stars.” During an appearance on “The Morning After Show,” Hough engaged in a candid conversation with fellow dancer Rylee Arnold, who expressed curiosity about dancing with her own boyfriend, NFL player Walker Lyons.
Arnold asked Hough how she imagined it would be to teach her partner some moves. Hough, 37, recalled her own memories from season 8 of DWTS in 2009, when she partnered with Wicks. Despite her success as a dancer and coach, she admitted the experience was particularly challenging due to their romantic relationship.
“It was really hard,” Hough confessed. “I was such a better coach to my other partners, but not a very good coach with my boyfriend at the time.” She struggled to balance the professional and personal dynamics, saying, “I couldn’t figure out how to do it.”
Hough and Wicks ended their relationship later that same year and emphasized their commitment to focusing on their respective careers. “We are such good friends,” Hough stated following their breakup. “Of course, we weren’t together. We will always continue being good friends.”

However, over a decade after their split, Wicks revealed that the breakup was not as amicable as it seemed. On his podcast, “Talk to Chuck,” Wicks shared a different perspective, noting that their relationship had initially blossomed during a tour and that they had even bought a house together before things soured. “Out of nowhere, you find out that they’re not the person that you thought they were,” he said.
Wicks also indicated that he and Hough had agreed to keep the details of their breakup private, projecting a public image of harmony. “It wasn’t fine. S*** hit the fan,” he remarked, suggesting that the split was fraught with tension rather than the amicable parting they had publicly described.
He expressed concern about running into Hough post-breakup and revealed that their paths had crossed only once in nearly a decade, at a charity event. “When Julianne and I broke up, I was like, ‘When am I going to see her?’” Wicks admitted, reflecting on his feelings at the time.
The revelations shed light on the complexities of relationships in the public eye, particularly when intertwined with professional collaborations. Both Hough and Wicks have moved on in their personal lives, but their shared history remains a topic of discussion for fans and media alike.
