Live Updates: No. 7 Centennial vs. No. 16 Mater Dei; CIF Southern Section Division 1 Semifinal, Preview, Scoring

Tonight’s CIF Southern Section Football Championships Division 1 semifinal features a pair of nationally ranked teams in No. 16 Mater Dei taking on No. 7 Corona Centennial.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific Time.

The Huskies (10-1) downed the Monarchs (8-2) 43-36 in a shootout back on Sept. 12.

The Monarchs enter Friday’s game riding a four-game winning streak while outscoring opponents 266-182 this season. Their only other loss was a 7-6 nail-biter against Santa Margarita – who takes on Orange Lutheran in the other CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinal.

Centennial’s offense can put up points in a hurry. The Huskies have outscored opponents 529-241 this season. Their only loss came at the hands of Santa Margarita, 33-27 in overtime on Aug. 28.

First Quarter

Centennial took the opening kickoff and began the game at its own 30 after a 28-yard kick return.

TURNOVER ON DOWNS! Centennial moved the ball quick, but got stuffed on a fourth-down run at the Mater Dei 36 and turned the ball over on downs.

Mater Dei extended its first drive inside the Centennial 30 on a fourth-down completion from Ryan Hopkins to Gavin Honore to move the chains.

SACK! Keawe Brown spun off a tackle and found Ryan Hopkins standing in front of him and collected the game’s first sack for Centennial.

TOUCHDOWN! Mater Dei junior running back Kennie Leggett scored on a 1-yard run to cap a 64-yard drive for the Monarchs. Nathan Enriquez booted the PAT and Mater Dei took a 7-0 lead over Centennial with 3:39 left in the first quarter.

TURNOVER ON DOWNS! The Huskies moved the ball again and stalled at nearly the same part of the field as their first drive, which also ended on downs. With 26 seconds left in the first quarter, Mater Dei took over at its own 39.

Second Quarter

PUNT! Mater Dei punted it back to Centennial’s 18 with 11:45 left in the first half.

TURNOVER ON DOWNS! Centennial made a gutsy call, going for it on fourth-and-1 in its own territory, but Mater Dei got a stop in the Huskies backfield with 10:39 left in the half. Mater Dei took over at its own 27.

Key Play! On first-and-goal, Mater Dei’s Mark Bowman took a snap out of the Wildcat formation from the Centennial 3. He made it to the 1 before being stripped. The ball rolled back to the Mater Dei 9 and went out of bounds at the Monarchs 9 just before the Huskies could get on it.

FIELD GOAL! Mater Dei’s Jerry Shifman booted a 26-yard field goal with 8:35 left in the half to make it 10-0, Monarchs. It was a big stop for the Huskies, who were pinned deep after the turnover on downs.

BIG PLAY! On fourth-and-12, Boogie Williams caught a pass over the middle to move the sticks for the Huskies. He had a defender draped all over him and managed to secure the catch down to the Mater Dei 13.

TOUCHDOWN! On fourth-and-1 from the 3, Centennial running back Malaki Davis ran up the middle and plunged into the end zone. Jayden Walk-Green booted the PAT and the Huskies trimmed the deficit to 10-7 with 4:03 left in the first half.

PUNT! Following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Mater Dei, the Monarchs were forced to punt the ball back to Centennial. The Huskies got the ball back at their own 27 with 2:22 left. Centennial muffed the punt but managed to recover it.

SACK! Montana Toilolo sacked Dominick Catalano back at the Huskies 20.

BIG PLAY(s)! Back-to-back big catches by Huskies receiver Ty Plinski set up Centennial with first down at the Mater Dei 29.

TOUCHDOWN! Dominick Catalano kept the ball on a read option and scored on a 4-yard run run with 26 seconds left in the half to give the Huskies their first lead of the game. Walk-Green booted the PAT. Centennial 14, Mater Dei 10.

Third Quarter

BIG RETURN! A huge return by CJ Lavender set up possession for Mater Dei at the Centennial 46 to begin the second half.

TOUCHDOWN! On Mater Dei’s second play from scrimmage of the half, Ryan Hopkins threw a short pass to Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and he went 43 yards untouched for a touchdown. The PAT from Enriquez was blocked. With 10:56 left in the half, Mater Dei leads 16-14.

PUNT! Centennial had two passes batted deflected at the line and was forced to punt the ball back to the Mater Dei 48. A dead ball personal foul on Mater Dei pushed the ball back to the Monarchs 33 with 10:07 left in the third.

PUNT! Mater Dei punted it back to Centennial’s 23 with 9:11 left in the third.

HUGE CATCH! Centennial’s Ty Plinski made an INSANE one-handed catch along the sideline down at the Mater Dei 10. You won’t see many catches better than the one he made at any level.

TOUCHDOWN! Dominick Catalano scored on a 2-yard keeper and Walk-Green booted the PAT to cap a 77-yard drive. The crazy catch by Plinski set up the TD. Centennial re-took the lead 21-16 with 6:21 left in the third.
