Italiano reflects on international break as Phoenix prepare to face Macarthur FC

Wellington Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano expressed ambivalence regarding the timing of the recent international break for his A-League squad as they prepare for their home clash against Macarthur FC this Saturday. While he acknowledged that the break provided a chance to recuperate and alleviate minor injuries and fatigue among players, he admitted to feeling frustration stemming from the lack of match play.
“It was good to alleviate some of the niggles and some of the boys had a little bit of fatigue,” Italiano noted. “But in terms of going out and wanting to play and execute and fix some of the things that we’ve identified, it’s a little bit frustrating when you don’t play for two weeks.” Despite these mixed feelings, he remains optimistic about the work done during the hiatus, focusing on refining team principles and attacking strategies.
The coach pointed out some critical shortcomings in the team’s previous match against Auckland FC, particularly in their failure to exploit the numerical advantage when facing a 10-men opponent. “The emotion consumed the players… which went away from what we were doing. That’s something that was addressed,” he stated. He underscored the importance of game management and adherence to tactics, emphasizing that the continuity and consistency of their performance would yield positive results as the season progresses.
Italiano has committed to the high defensive line strategy despite scrutiny from pundits. He explained that the players have embraced this approach, attributing recent struggles to execution errors rather than tactical failures. “With the least amount of shots in the league conceded against us, it is working,” he affirmed. “We just need to be switched on for the whole 90 in order for it to work effectively.”

As they gear up to face Macarthur FC, who sit just one place and one point behind the Phoenix in the league standings, Italiano expressed respectful caution regarding their opponents. He highlighted key players such as Luke Brattan, their playmaker, along with Harry Sawyer and Anthony Caceres, whose skills pose significant threats. “We need to make sure we neutralize their threats. They’re going to be a tough team to play,” he warned.
Historically, Wellington Phoenix has had the upper hand against Macarthur FC, winning eight out of their last 13 encounters. The upcoming match is set to be played at Sky Stadium in Wellington, with kickoff scheduled for 5 PM NZT. Fans can catch the action live on Sky Open and Sky Sport 3 in New Zealand, as well as on Paramount+ in Australia.
In terms of squad updates, the Phoenix are expected to make some adjustments, with Manjrekar James returning from injury, while key players like Tim Payne and Nikola Mileusnic remain on the sidelines due to injury concerns. The Macarthur Bulls also have notable absences, including Chris Ikonomidis and Dean Bosnjak, hampering their usual strategy as they look to compete fiercely in this weekend’s match.
As the teams prepare to take the field, both sides are acutely aware of the importance of the points at stake, making for an intriguing encounter in the A-League as the season unfolds.
