The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 will forever be remembered by the fans. Whether it was Kohli having a clash with Konstas or Bumrah giving a death stare, the series was filled with intense moments. Recently, an Australian player told what Konstas said to Kohli on that day.
Sam Konstas is not a part of the Australian team in the Ashes, but he is still on the headlines. Konstas made his debut for the team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and had a glorifying start. But he was not able to maintain the momentum, due to which he was dropped from the team.
Fans do remember the incident which took place between Sam Konstas and Virat Kohli. Both players had a shoulder bump, following which some words were also exchanged by them. Other players stepped right in time to ensure that the altercation didn’t proceed further between these two players. Recently, it has been revealed to the fans what Konstas said to Kohli during the game.
1. Konstas Kohli Incident
India and Australia were facing each other in the Boxing Day Test when the incident between Kohli and Konstas took place. It was also the debut game for Sam Konstas, as he took the upper hand over the Indian bowlers. Even in his debut game, Konstas was able to bring up some classic boundaries and score a half-century in the game.
Virat Kohli, known for his mind games, thought to use it even on the youngster. This happened when the over came to an end, and the sides had to be changed. During this, Virat Kohli had a shoulder bump with Sam Konstas, after which some words were exchanged from both sides.
Usman Khawaja who stood with Sam Konstas at that time immediately intervened in this matter to ensure it doesn’t escalate further. Even the umpires had to step in to take away both of these players. No one knew what were the words exchanged by both Sam Konstas and Virat Kohli, as it remained a mystery to those present on the field.
But it is not a mystery anymore. The incident has now been revealed by an Australian player, Oliver Peake. He was also a part of the team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but he was given the duty of a drinks boy. It should also be noted that Oliver Peake is one of the close friends for Sam Konstas.
He said,“I remember running him gloves, and him and Uzie out there was pretty cool. Uzie was a bit taken aback by the way he was going about it. He just looked so in the zone and so confident that he was looking fine out there. It was great to watch as a fan and also as a mate. When Kohli shoulder-charged him, Sam said, ‘I know you’re a good player, but have some respect.’”
2. The Aftermath
The incident between Virat Kohli and Sam Konstas brought the game’s discipline into question. Following this, the match referee Andy Pycroft decided to intervene in the matter. Virat Kohli accepted his mistake in the match, and he was fined 20% of his match fees. Sam Konstas was not given any fine in this incident, as the reasons behind it remain unknown.
Along with that, Virat Kohli was also given one demerit point, which will remain in his account for 2 years. Following the day, Sam Konstas was also present in the post match conference and he talked about the incident which took place between him and Virat Kohli.
Konstas said, “I was just doing my gloves (up) and I think he accidentally bumped me. But I think that’s just cricket, just the tension. Obviously, it got heated at times, which was good for me. I feel like that brings the best out of me. Hopefully I go well next innings.”
Usman Khawaja also reacted to this incident as he said,“I was walking the other way and just as I turned around, I saw them collide. I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ Sammy was going, he was on fire, his beans were obviously going. I just came to diffuse the situation. I like the emotion. There was a bit of chirp going on between Sam and (Jasprit) Bumrah and Virat the whole time. But I didn’t want it to be tainted by any physical contact.”
