Burnley vs Chelsea preview
Chelsea climbed into the top three with back-to-back wins before the international break and they can move to within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal by defeating Burnley at Turf Moor.
Expectations at Stamford Bridge are always high and there are reasons for the Blues to be satisfied with their start to the campaign.
Returning to competitive action just five weeks after winning the Club World Cup was always going to be a huge challenge, but Chelsea have taken 20 points from 11 Premier League games and are a point better off than at the same stage of last term.
Enzo Maresca’s Blues have gathered seven points in the Champions League and are through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, where they will face League One Cardiff in the Welsh capital.
Chelsea’s squad depth allowed them to make seven changes for their 2-2 draw at Qarabag in the Champions League and it should serve them well as they continue to contend on multiple fronts.
However, they rely more on some players than others and will be especially keen on a swift return for Cole Palmer, who has been sidelined for two months.
The Londoners have had a few issues with consistency and they have already lost to one promoted team, Sunderland, this season. But they face an easier task against the Clarets, who have found it far harder to adjust to the higher grade than the Black Cats.
Burnley’s promotion was based on a watertight rearguard but they are finding top-flight attacks much more difficult to contain. Scott Parker’s side have conceded 22 goals, only three fewer than rock-bottom Wolves, although they have been more compact and competitive at Turf Moor, where they have not been disgraced in losses to Liverpool (0-1) and Arsenal (0-2).
Burnley played with greater freedom at West Ham last time but it worked against them as they offered up far too many chances in a 3-2 defeat to one of their main relegation rivals.
However, the break will have given them a chance to refocus and it would be no great surprise to see them sit in a tight, low block against the Blues in an attempt to stay in the contest for as long as possible.
Chelsea may need to show patience to find a way through, but they have won four of their last five games on the road and should get the job done eventually.
Trevoh can hit the target
Chelsea seem sure to have plenty of possession and territory in Lancashire and should therefore get plenty of opportunities from corners and attacking free-kicks.
Defender Trevoh Chalobah is one of the Blues’ main set-piece targets and he looks overpriced to steer an effort on goal.
Clarets could be contained
Chelsea have conceded 11 goals in as many league games, the most of teams in the top six.
However, they have kept back-to-back Premier League clean sheets and can shut out Burnley, who are likely to be preoccupied with defending for long periods.
Burnley vs Chelsea Bet Builder
Joao Pedro to score or assist
The Brazilian has taken on plenty of responsibility in his first season with Chelsea and may come up with a match-defining moment at Turf Moor.
Kyle Walker to be shown a card
Burnley’s former England star is having to do a lot more defending than he did in his days at Manchester City and may pick up his fourth card of the campaign.
Under 3.5 goals
Burnley have been keeping things tight at home and can ensure Chelsea don’t run away with things.
