Irish designer Paul Costelloe dies at the age of 80

Paul Costelloe has died at the age of 80 after a short illness.
The Irish design legend’s passing was confirmed on Saturday, with a spokesperson saying he ‘was surrounded by his wife and seven children.’
Sharing the news in a short statement, a spokesperson said: ‘We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Costelloe following a short illness.

‘He was surrounded by his wife and seven children and passed peacefully in London. We kindly ask that you respect the privacy of the family during this time.’
For four decades, Paul has been at the helm of Irish design and often drawn comparisons to America’s Ralph Lauren for his love of immaculate tailoring.

Paul would often draw his Irish heritage with garments including Aran knits and Irish tweeds, but always with an international polish, which reflected his experience working in New York, Paris, and Milan.
At his last London Fashion Week show in September, Paul reflected on four decades of design with an ultra-feminine and flirty collection full of pastel tones and abbreviated hemlines.

The show, entitled Boulevard of Dreams, was an optimistic and effervescent affair with pretty prints, soft checks, oversized bows and strategic cutouts that highlighted willowy waistlines.
Paul, who also had a collection in Dunnes Stores, worked with many stars over the years, including Rosanna Davison.

Rosanna celebrated a ‘full circle moment’ with Paul in October at his first Ireland Fashion Week show, two decades after she first walked for him at London Fashion Week.
