Newcastle vs Manchester City preview

A chilly Saturday evening is forecast in Newcastle, where Manchester City are aiming to turn up the heat on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

City’s last league result was an impressive 3-0 home win over Liverpool and a victory against Newcastle at St James’ Park would take them to within a point of the Gunners at the top of the table.

It takes something special to overshadow in-form City striker Erling Haaland but teammate Jeremy Doku managed it with a brilliant display against Liverpool.

The Belgian winger has started to deliver consistently on his undoubted potential and he is a tempting bet to score or assist a goal on Tyneside.

Doku set up two of City’s goals in September’s 3-0 win over Manchester United and scored their third against Liverpool with a stunning strike in the 63rd minute.

He has also contributed a goal against Napoli and an assist against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, also racking up five goals and two assists in eight World Cup qualifying appearances for Belgium.

After playing for Belgium in Tuesday’s 7-0 rout of Liechtenstein, Doku can expect a tougher assignment against Newcastle at St James’ Park but the Magpies may not be able to keep him quiet.

Newcastle have won seven of their ten home matches in all competitions this season and they conceded in the 100th and 96th minutes of their dramatic league defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal.

Eddie Howe’s men will be glad to be back on home turf after 3-1 defeats at West Ham and Brentford while City are less formidable away from the Etihad.

They were subdued in last month’s 1-0 loss at Aston Villa, which followed a midweek trip to Villarreal in the Champions League, and Rodri’s absence means they should be swerved in the match betting.

Newcastle enforcer Joelinton should add to card collection

Joelinton was booked in Newcastle’s 2-1 home defeats to Arsenal and Barcelona this season and he may have to do some dirty work to disrupt City’s rhythm this weekend.

The Brazilian picked up 12 and ten yellow cards in his last two full Premier League campaigns and he was one of eight players booked in this fixture last season.

Magpies can take a point off in-form visitors

Anthony Gordon’s penalty earned Newcastle a 1-1 draw with City at St James’ Park in September 2024 and that correct score is worth a small bet again.

City brushed aside Wolves 4-0 in their opener at Molineux but their next four away results were a 2-1 loss at Brighton, a 1-1 draw at Arsenal, a 1-0 win at Brentford and a 1-0 defeat at Villa.

Newcastle or draw double chance

Manchester City have scored only three goals in their last four Premier League away matches and Newcastle are a tough team to beat on their own patch.

Bruno Guimaraes to have one or more shots

The Newcastle midfielder scored in August’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Liverpool and has had at least one shot in six of his last seven league appearances.

Over 10.5 corners

Both teams play with plenty of width and Newcastle’s home fixtures in the league this term have averaged 11.2 corners per game.
