Paul Pogba named in Monaco squad to face Rennes after more than two years out

Paul Pogba has been named in Monaco’s squad to face Rennes on Saturday, his first in more than two years.
If the 32-year-old plays in the Ligue 1 game, it will be his first appearance since September 2023 after receiving a ban for breaching anti-doping regulations.
Pogba joined Monaco on a free transfer in June, signing a two-year contract with the Ligue 1 club after being a free agent since leaving Juventus in November 2024.
The former Manchester United midfielder was initially given a four-year ban in February 2024, which was later reduced to 18 months on appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). That meant he was eligible to return to training in January, and resume his playing career in March.

Monaco head coach Sebastien Pocognoli, who replaced Adi Hutter in October, said Pogba would have to be “assess(ed) as a player” upon his return to the team, but feels the midfielder still possesses the quality which made him such an important figure for Juventus and France.
“The Paul of Manchester United or his first period at Juventus dates back several years now,” Pocognoli said, per Reuters. “Every player evolves according to their age and experience, so we’ll have to judge him based on his background and his age.
“From what I see, he still possesses the technique we know he has. The rhythm of the matches will give us some answers. He can be the best version of himself at AS Monaco; in any case, it will be my role to try and guide him towards that level.”
Pogba began his youth career at Le Havre before joining United as a teenager. He has made 91 appearances for France, with whom he won 2018 World Cup. He is also a four-time Serie A winner with Juventus, and played 190 times for the Turin club, but is yet to play French domestic football professionally.
