Zebo: Ireland have style to beat Boks

Simon Zebo believes Ireland possess the structure and shape needed to trouble the Springboks in Dublin on Saturday.

Ireland have won four of their last five Tests against South Africa, and Zebo told Planet Rugby that their attacking structure naturally challenges the Bok defensive system.

RECENT MEETINGS: Ireland have the Boks’ number

“Ireland have the style to beat them because of Ireland’s short passing,” said the former winger. “When that structure and shape is done well, the defence you’ll have the most joy against is a team like South Africa, who have out-and-out line speed.

“Playing under that structure, we quite enjoyed playing South African teams because you know the defence will come to you and we have so many options off the hip to exploit that.”

DU TOIT: Ireland pose a different challenge

Zebo believes Ireland “definitely have the tools” to hand the world champions their first defeat of the Autumn Nations Series, especially after last weekend’s record victory over Australia in Dublin.

And he says there’s no shortage of motivation when it comes to facing the Boks.

Ireland’s last win over South Africa came at the 2023 World Cup, a result that extended their winning streak to 16 Tests.

After that pool match, Bok lock Eben Etzebeth claimed “probably 12 out of the [Ireland] 23 when I shook their hands told me, ‘See you guys in the final’”.

Zebo says that comment will still sting – and still energise.

“Oh yeah, for sure,” he said. “I know Rassie will be doing the same with South Africa – mentally charging his team up – and Andy Farrell will have plenty of ammo too. It makes for an enthralling game.”

IRISH LEGEND: Some of Rassie’s innovations are bulls**t

However, he also cast doubt on Etzebeth’s version of events.

“I was surprised. I just didn’t really believe it,” he said. “I can see how he could get caught in a story and maybe over-exaggerate a little. I just don’t know if that many players would have said that.

“You never know. Fair play to him – he backed himself. He’s world-class and not afraid to stand his ground.”
