As a founding presenter of RTÉ’s flagship Morning Ireland radio programme, the gravelly voice of David Hanly was the first early-morning sound for a generation of Irish people.

Mr Hanly, an accomplished writer, journalist and broadcaster, who has died aged 82, left a rich legacy of work and memories, despite being forced into early retirement due to ill health in 2002.
