Why is Blackpool week on Strictly Come Dancing so special?

The famous ballroom dates back to 1894 and is made from 30,602 pieces of oak, mahogany and walnut wood.

The present version of the ballroom opened in 1899.

Each of the large crystal chandeliers can be lowered to the floor and take more than a week to clean every year.

They are made of hand-cut crystals from Italy and use LED bulbs.

In 2022 experts spent three weeks breaking down more than 100 layers of lacquer before sanding and resealing the floor of the ballroom.

The dancefloor is also sprung – which means it is supported underneath by springy wooden strips or foam, making the floor slightly bouncy to dance on.

Sprung floors are thought to be the best kind of floor for dancing and indoor sports as they can enhance performance and reduce strain and injury.

The Blackpool dancefloor is also about nine times bigger than the Elstree one.

The ballroom regularly hosts World and all-England dance championships and the Blackpool Junior Dance Festival has been held each year in the ballroom since 1964.
