The new Iraklio International Airport at Kastelli – a project that is expected to radically change the map of air transport on Crete and which is set to develop into one of the most modern airports in the Mediterranean – is about to be completed.

According to a progress report released by Christos Panagiotopoulos, CEO of Terna, and Vangelis Masouras, vice president of Terna, the first test flights are scheduled for 2027, marking the beginning of the final stretch toward its operation, as the progress of the works is already at an extremely advanced stage.

The project is being developed by the Heraklion Crete International Airport (HCIA) consortium, in which the Greek state is participating with a 45.9% stake, the GEK Terna Group with 32.46% and the Indian group GMR with 21.64%, while construction is being carried out by Terna SA, the construction arm of the GEK Terna Group.

In particular, according to the official presentation, the progress of the works by October 31, 2025 had exceeded 65%, with the main construction phases near completion.
