Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd Ward) reported on social media that “300 juveniles” were “rioting” in the Loop at the time of the shooting. He also said CPD officers were “attacked and injured with mace and stun guns” leading to one officer being hospitalized, but CPD has not confirmed that information as of Saturday.

A second victim, an 18-year-old man, was shot in the left and also taken to Northwestern in serious condition. He was unable to provide details about the shooting to investigators.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting.
It was unclear if the two shootings were related.
What they’re saying:
Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the press, reminding the young people of Chicago that they should not attend unauthorized events advertised on social media.
“Because of the reckless behavior of a few individuals, we have families devastated, and our downtown residents are hesitant to leave their own homes,” he continued.
“The holiday season is a time when we come together as a city. It’s when we spend time with our families and our loved ones,” Johnson said. “This is the opposite type of behavior that anybody wants to see. We have too many guns and too many young people who don’t value their own lives or the lives of others, and when we have a setback like this, it just reminds us of the long road that we have to build the city that we all want to live in.”
The mayor’s office said additional police resources will be deployed during Saturday night’s Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.
