Marcelo Bielsa has already shared his Dominic Calvert-Lewin verdict amid talk of Leeds United return

Marcelo Bielsa could soon depart his role with Uruguay, which has sparked talk of a return to Leeds amid doubts over Daniel Farke.

Bielsa lost 5-1 to Mauricio Pochettino on Wednesday morning as the United States hammered Uruguay, which prompted El Observador to reveal that he could be sacked with just five wins in the last 18 games.

With Daniel Farke also on a poor run of four defeats in five Premier League outings, there is a remote possibility Leeds could soon be looking for a new manager just as the 70-year-old becomes available.

Would you have Marcelo Bielsa back at Leeds?

If Marcelo Bielsa does return to Leeds, he would presumably be excited to work with Dominic Calvert-Lewin based on what he’s previously said about the Englishman.

Marcelo Bielsa heaped praise on Dominic Calvert-Lewin back in 2020

After Leeds recorded a 1-0 win over Everton in November 2020, the Argentine highlighted just how hard his side worked to nullify the England international.

Leeds Live quoted Bielsa as saying: “It’s not easy to neutralise him.

“The whole team made a big effort defensively to stop him, especially our centre-backs against him. But he had chances to score and we worked so that the opportunities he had on goal would be difficult ones. But nonetheless, he was a player who was as dangerous as he usually is.”

Calvert-Lewin scored 21 goals in 39 appearances for Everton during that 2020/21 campaign, so Bielsa was justifiably worried about the threat he posed.

Marcelo Bielsa could be exactly what Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs at Leeds United

Calvert-Lewin is struggling under Farke with just one goal in nine Premier League games so far.

However, Bielsa has previously proven he can get the best from his strikers.

That 2020/21 season also saw Patrick Bamford net 17 goals and provide nine assists in 38 Premier League appearances, a forward who had previously failed to stand out at that level across spells with Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Burnley and Middlesbrough.

Bamford only scored 24 Premier League goals in total across 102 appearances for all of those clubs and Leeds, so if Bielsa was able to coax a 17-goal season out of him, the same could happen for Calvert-Lewin.
