Liverpool fans were seething at PGMOL after Eberechi Eze’s “offside goal” was “looked at and dismissed”.

The Gunners had been the better of the two teams in the early stages of the north London derby – despite Mikel Arteta’s ongoing injury crisis. And after Leandro Trossard netted the opener, Eze doubled the lead with some individual brilliance.

Eze ducked and weaved through the Spurs defence, but pulling the ball back across the face of the goal, leaving Guglielmo Vicario flat-footed. However, three Arsenal defenders were stood offside as he took the shot – all in Vicario’s line of sight.

Vicario gestured to the referee that he couldn’t see, but his complaints were waved away. Gary Neville, who was on co-commentary for Sky Sports, noted the action but added VAR had “looked at” the decision and “dismissed” it.

Tottenham legend Les Ferdinand speaking on Sky Sports said he “couldn’t understand” how the goal was not ruled out for offside in the studio at half-time.

He fumed: “I will say, I don’t understand how this [Arsenal players] doesn’t affect the goalkeepers sight [on the second goal]. I’m not sure how that’s not been looked at.”

The call comes two weeks after Liverpool were left livid when they saw a goal chalked off when Andy Robertson was deemed to have interfered with play by blocking Gianluigi Donnarumma’s view.

In the following days, Liverpool launched a complaint to the referees’ chiefs with Arne Slot’s side rejecting the idea that the decision was arrived at for subjective reasons – instead believing it’s criteria based.

One Liverpool fan fumed: “How was Eze’s goal allowed to stand but Liverpool’s goal was ruled offside last week. The inconsistency in the rule interpretation is Jarring.”

“I’m confused on how that Eze goal was allowed, isn’t two of them offside in the keepers view,” a second questioned. While a third shared: Every game the Robertson offside vs Man City looks worse and worse. How’s that not offside for the Eze goal? 3 Arsenal players blocking the goalkeepers view…”

And another added: “Another example of Liverpool getting robbed of a goal vs Man City. Eze’s shot had 2 Arsenal bodies in Vicario’s vision standing offside and yet there wasn’t even a check…”
