Will Cowboys Re-Sign Brandon Aubrey? Latest Rumors on Contract, RFA Tender on Kicker

The Dallas Cowboys will have a decision to make when it comes to arguably the best kicker in the NFL this offseason, and they are reportedly exploring their options.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that “Dallas has dipped its toes into contract talks with” Brandon Aubrey. However, he also added “those talks have not come to fruition and will be handled in the offseason.”

Rapoport explained it could use the tag on the Notre Dame product, but doing so would prevent it from using a tag on wide receiver George Pickens. Of course, the Cowboys reaching an agreement on a long-term deal with Pickens would then allow them to use the tag on Aubrey.

One option with Aubrey is the second-round tender, which would mean any team trying to land the kicker would then have to give the Cowboys a second-round selection. They could even use a first-round RFA tender for approximately $8 million if they wanted to all but guarantee another team wouldn’t go after him.

Kickers don’t often generate that many headlines in free agency, but Aubrey is not a normal kicker.

He was a Pro Bowler in each of his first two seasons in 2023 and 2024 and is known for his ability to connect on long-range kicks. In fact, he is a head-turning 30-of-34 on field goals of 50 yards or more in his career and has a long of at least 60 yards in each of his three seasons to this point.

Overall, he is 94-of-104 (90.4 percent) on field-goal attempts in his career and 111-of-115 (96.5 percent) on extra points.

Aubrey is quite a weapon for a Dallas offense that is essentially in scoring range every time it crosses midfield because of his big leg and consistency.

The front office will have to decide what that is worth this offseason.
