‘Carrying firearms’: Wild explanation after schools forced into lockdown in Sydney

A major police operation in Sydney’s northwest forced multiple schools into lockdown on Monday following a firearm scare caused by someone picking up toys from a local clean-up.

Officers responded to reports of a person seen walking along a footpath “carrying firearms” on Guardian Avenue in Beaumont Hills about 10.24am.

The scare prompted a major police operation, which led to several schools being forced into lockdown.

“Police commenced a large search of the area and, following inquiries, were able to speak to the person and established the firearms seen were toys that had been picked up from a local cleanup,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Several nearby schools were placed into lockdown as a precaution.”

PolAir were also seen circling the location at the time.

The lockdown of those schools has been lifted as of midday.

NSW Police said officers take all reports seriously and thanked the community of Beaumont Hills for their assistance.
