Calgary snowfall coming Monday; more expected throughout week

When Calgarians open their blinds Monday morning, they are likely to find their first sizable snowfall of the season.

660 NewsRadio Meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says snowfall expected Sunday evening will continue Monday until around noon, and will wrap up in the afternoon.

“By the time the system wraps up, we will have six to eight centimetres on the ground,” he said.

Monday’s high is -2 C, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and wind chill is expected to bring the temperature down to -10 C. The chance of flurries Sunday evening sits at 30 per cent.

More snow is expected on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with temperatures hovering in the -10 C range.

Time to winterize?

This also comes as Calgarians have been enjoying their green grass, motorcycles, and even patios a little longer this year.

Cliff Keveryga with Calgary Home Inspections says Calgarians haven’t felt the same sense of urgency to winterize this year, but with cooler temperatures and snow in the forecast, now it’s go time.

“We’ve been lulled into this beautiful fall, and if you haven’t done a few things, especially on the exterior of your home, I would strongly advise it because winter is coming,” he explained.

A simple tip he provides is to turn the water off to your exterior hose and drain it to prevent it from freezing; otherwise, it can lead to burst water pipes.

“Disconnecting your hoses from those hose bibs and turning off those waters is number one because we do unfortunately run into situations where people have forgotten and the pipes have burst in their basement,” he said.

Chelsea Woods is an owner at Calgary Lawn Solutions, and she says they are still getting calls for fall cleanups, which normally happen in September.

“It is important to get all of the leaves and debris off of your grass just in preparation for snowfall. That way, there’s no leaves on the grass that turn into that slimy mess in the springtime when all of the snow melts,” she said.

Woods says this is very likely the last chance Calgarians will get to blow out irrigation, rake up debris, and call pest control before the ground freezes.
