Toronto – Volcanic eruption reported in the Afar region of Ethiopia.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 10 A.M. local time in Ertale, one of the hottest spots in the planet which is also one of the tourist attractions in the country.
The strongest eruption was 10 kilometers South of Ertale.
A cloud of heavy smoke was observed in the area, according to a report from state-owned media.
Professor Atalay Ayele, head of Seismology Department at Addis Ababa University, is cited as saying the Danakil Depression is where rift valley formation is underway.
The eruption is attributed to active volcano movements and increasing pressures.
The professor remarked that the eruption throws stones to the air, forms heavy clouds and releases fiery ashes. Geophysics researchers have reportedly headed to the location.
Ertale is one of the main sites for active volcanoes and there had been eruptions in the past.
In January this year, a recurring earthquake was reported in the region and as many as 80,000 residents were reported to be in need of immediate evacuation away from the epicenter of it.
