Arne Slot pulls out of receiving award following Liverpool’s 3-0 loss against Nottingham Forest

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot pulled out of receiving an award in Manchester on Sunday night following his side’s 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest a day earlier.

Slot won the Football Writers’ Association Northern manager of the year award after guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season.

But Slot’s side have struggled to defend their crown, losing six of their opening 12 league games and sitting 11th after Saturday’s home defeat.

Slot had been due to collect the award in person but pulled out on the morning of the awards’ dinner. Liverpool instead sent club ambassador Gary McAllister to collect the prize in the 47-year-old’s place. In a speech, McAllister apologised on behalf of Slot and said the Dutchman was “extremely proud” to have won the award.

Liverpool have lost six of their opening 12 Premier League games for only the second time in history (the other being 2014-15), with those six defeats in their last seven as many as they suffered in their last 58 matches, per Opta.

“It is my responsibility, whether we win or lose,” Slot said in his press conference following the Forest loss.

“But what I also see is a team keeping on trying until the end and the fans as well by the way, who stayed to the end to support the players.

“Lately, it’s almost constantly that we miss our chances and the ones we concede go in. That will not continue throughout the whole season.

“But we need that moment of energy of scoring a goal when playing well and going 1-0 up. The opposite thing happened as Forest got a big energy boost from scoring.

“I see a lot of things where in a normal situation the result would have been different but we’re now in a difficult situation.”

Slot’s side return to action on Wednesday when they host PSV in the Champions League.
