Man in 40s dies after being tased by Calgary police during mental health call

A man died in the custody of Calgary police over the weekend, prompting an investigation from Alberta’s police watchdog.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) says officers were called to a home on 30 Avenue SE in Dover around 4:40 p.m. Sunday by EMS personnel.
Paramedics were reportedly concerned about safety during a mental health call they were responding to at the address.
When police got to the scene, they say a man in his 40s was “behaving erratically.”
Police tried to arrest the man when, according to CPS, he became combative and assaulted one of the officers.
Officers tased him, but say he continued to resist arrest.
The man then went into medical distress.
He was taken to hospital where he later died.
No officers were seriously injured in the incident, CPS says.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been tapped to investigate the matter.
As the incident is now under the purview of ASIRT, CPS has no further comment.
