Parts of the UK are braced for 60mph winds this weekend as the country shifts from a week of freezing temperatures to a spell of wet and unsettled weather.
The Met Office issued a number of severe weather warnings this week as a cold snap brought snow, ice and temperatures as low as -12C. It forced dozens of schools to close, caused disruption on the roads and left homes without power because of snow.
After a damp and dull day for many on Saturday (November 22), the forecaster says “strong and gusty” winds could hit parts of the UK on Sunday.
Met Office weather maps show winds of up to 60mph battering west Wales on Sunday evening. St David’s in Pembrokshire is set to see the strongest gusts, while nearby Pembroke and Fishguard could reach wind speeds of around 58mph.

Gusts are forecast to begin building from the early hours, with winds of 40-50mph expected from 3am, before peaking later in the afternoon.
Strong winds may also affect other parts of the UK, with gusts nearing 50mph in north Wales, around 40mph in parts of southwest and southeast England, and 30mph across eastern England.

Currently, no weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office. Forecasts also suggest many areas will see showers and longer spells of rain throughout the day, especially in the southwest.
The Met Office said in a blog post on Friday (November 21): “Strong and gusty winds are likely in these regions, making it feel less pleasant despite slightly higher temperatures. Most areas will experience showers on and off throughout the day, with a good deal of cloud cover persisting.”
While it is set to warm up slightly to between 7C and 12C in the coming days, unsettled weather will be seen, with the potential for heavy rain at times.
Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “This weekend we’ve got bands of rain crossing the country, so we will start to see snow melt away where we’ve got it, and it’s generally looking a bit more unsettled over the next few days.
“Temperatures will be closer to average, between 7C and 12C. In the next few days some areas will see frost overnight.
“There will be heavy rain at times but no weather warnings at the moment. It will be quite widespread rain. On Sunday we’ve got a band of rain crossing the country which could be heavy at times. It will be followed by scattered showers.
“Next week it’s looking a little drier on Monday and Tuesday. From the middle of the week onwards through to the end it will be quite unsettled, wet and windy, but quite a bit milder, many places will be in double figures on Thursday.”
