Thanksgiving dinner costs drop as Wells Fargo finds grocery prices lower than last year

(TNND) — Thanksgiving prices have gone up in recent years, with U.S. inflation in 2025 driving grocery prices higher, except for this year.
For a typical Thanksgiving dinner in 2025, consumers can expect groceries to be around 2% to 3% less than the previous year, according to an analysis by Wells Fargo.
Grocery prices rose around 2.7% in the last year, but Wells Fargo found that Thanksgiving staples are not driving up grocery inflation.
“At the heart of the uptick in the CPI’s food-at-home increase is protein, specifically beef and eggs, which are not on the Thanksgiving menu,” the report said.
Consumers are expected to spend around $80 on groceries for a 10-person Thanksgiving dinner, if they were to stick to store brands, and around $95 if they buy brand names. Wells Fargo’s analysis is based on a family serving turkey, stuffing, frozen vegetables, prepared mashed potatoes, gravy, fresh cranberries, dinner rolls, salad mix, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream.
Shoppers will be able to save money on certain items for Thanksgiving dinner, according to Wells Fargo:
- Turkeys are down 3.7%
- Name-brand frozen vegetables are down 15%
- Private-brand dinner rolls have gone down 22%
- National-brand pumpkin pies are down 3%, with whipped cream increasing by 3%
- Stuffing, gravy mix, and fresh cranberries around 3% to 4%
Stores like Aldi, Walmart, and Target are offering consumers a budget Thanksgiving dinner, with Aldi offering the lowest price at $4 a person.
The package Aldi is offering includes a turkey as well as ingredients to make nine side dishes for 10 people.
“Price leadership is part of our DNA, and the holidays are when our commitment to value really shines,” said Scott Patton, chief commercial officer of Aldi U.S. “We believe families shouldn’t have to make trade-offs to feed everyone, especially at Thanksgiving.”
Target’s Thanksgiving meal is for under $20, serving four people.
“Our under-$20 Thanksgiving meal is priced even lower than last year’s, but we’re not stopping there,” said Lisa Roath, Target’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer of food, essentials, and beauty. “We also have new seasonal sides, stylish table décor, festive apparel, and beautiful greenery and florals.”
Walmart is offering a Thanksgiving basket that will serve 10 people for less than $40, around $4 per person, which is the lowest price Walmart has ever offered on the holiday meal.
Amazon Fresh is offering consumers a full meal with side dishes for $25, serving six people.
