Ireland cannot be an outlier on asylum as other countries tighten rules, Taoiseach says

Taoiseach Micheál Martin visits a museum in honour of schoolboy Hector Pietersen, who was shot dead aged 12 by white police during the Soweto uprising in 1976. Hector was one of 175 young people killed by police during the protests sparked by the enforced teaching of the Afrikaans language to black students in schools during Apartheid. The Taoiseach has said Ireland cannot be an outlier on immigration when other Western countries are cracking down on entitlements for asylum-seekers.
Speaking in South Africa, Micheál Martin did not deny reports about tightened social protection eligibility and restrictions to Irish citizenship for those who have been receiving welfare payments long term.
