Beavers Fall to Gaels in Double-Overtime

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands – The Oregon State men’s basketball team fell to Iona 91-84 in double-overtime Saturday evening at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas.
Noah Amenhauser recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The center went 8-for-11 from the floor and recorded three blocks. Isaiah Sy tallied 18 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Johan Munch ended his day with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Malcolm Christie had nine points, while Olavi Suutela put up eight points.
As a team, Oregon State shot 43.1 percent from the floor and scored 42 points in the paint.
The Beavers led by 19 points in the second half, but the Gaels battled back to force the extra period, and were able to prevail after two overtimes.
Oregon State will now play UMass on Monday.
Amenhauser had a block and four points within the first minute of action, as the Beavers opened up an early lead. Iona battled back to take a 9-7 edge into the game’s first media timeout. The two sided traded punches through most of the first half, with Oregon State in front 29-26 with four minutes on the clock.
Oregon State headed to the intermission up 34-30. Amenhauser led the Beavers with 11 first-half points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor.
The Beavers used 7-0 run early in the second frame to take a 45-31 lead. Oregon State followed that up with nine unanswered points to extend the lead to 19, but the Gaels responded with 13-straight points to get back within six with 5:35 to go.
Iona cut the edge to five late in the second half, and converted a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to level the score and send the game to overtime.
Oregon State led for the bulk of the first overtime period, but Iona knocked down a pair of free throws with five seconds on the clock to force a second extra period with the score tied at 79. The Gaels prevailed in the second overtime period.
The Beavers will head into Monday’s game with a record of 3-3.
