Salford Youth Project Combats Bike Theft with Free Maintenance and Registration Event

Salford’s youth service is collaborating with local officers from Eccles, Irlam, and Cadishead to combat bike theft through a new initiative that offers free bike maintenance and registration. This program is part of the Salford Youth Bike Project, which has successfully distributed over 500 old and unwanted bikes to young people throughout the city. The project’s aim is to facilitate easier mobility for residents in Salford.
On Thursday, November 27, from 4 PM to 6 PM, the youth services and local officers will set up at Cadishead Park to assist community members in registering their bikes on the only police-approved cycle database. This registration service not only helps safeguard bikes but also allows the public to verify second-hand bikes to ensure they are not purchasing stolen property.
In addition to this registration event, the project features a mobile unit that travels to various disadvantaged areas, further promoting bike security. This initiative is especially timely as the holiday season approaches, enabling individuals to register new bikes and enhance their security.
The issue of bike theft is particularly pressing in the UK, with an alarming number of reported incidents. In the year 2023/24, a total of 66,960 bike thefts were reported, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for 3,108 of those cases. Disturbingly, only 32 of these thefts resulted in charges. A recent YouGov survey highlighted that 77% of respondents in the UK express skepticism regarding police investigations into bike thefts, marking it as the crime with the highest level of distrust among the public.

The initiative represents a significant step toward fostering community awareness and bike safety in the region.
