Ex-Pa. high school hoops star banned for life by NCAA after betting against own team

Hysier Miller, a former star guard from Neumann Goretti, bet against his own team while playing for the Temple Owls, according to the NCAA.

The NCAA shared the findings on Friday while announcing that Miller is now permanently ineligible to play again.

According to NBC Sports, the NCAA found that Miller “placed 42 parlay bets totaling $473” on Owls’ games during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons. And the NCAA said three of those bets were against Temple.

NBC noted that Miller started every game for the Owls across those two seasons.

Miller’s lawyer, Jason P. Bologna, claimed that the NCAA found no evidence that Miller shaved points in those games in what he called a “long and thorough investigation.”

“Hysier gave them full access to his cell phone and bank account, and he answered every question they asked him,” Bologna said. “He admitted to placing parlay bets, but he denied shaving points in any game, and the NCAA’s findings confirm that they accept Hysier was honest and cooperative with their investigation.”

“While it is disappointing to see Temple mentioned in this context, we know that it is not representative of our athletics program,” Temple president John Fry said last year. “The university has been aware of these allegations since they were first reported in the media in March 2024. We have been fully responsive and cooperative with the NCAA since the moment we learned of the investigation. While the university has not received any requests for information from state or federal law enforcement agencies regarding these allegations, we will cooperate fully should we be contacted.”

CBS reported that in March 2024 a watchdog group flagged Temple games for “suspicious gambling activity.” The site said that U.S. Integrity alerted casinos to unusual wagering around the March matchup between Temple and UAB. CBS said the line on that game moved for UAB -1.5 to UAB -8 before settling at UAB -7 prior to the tip. Temple lost the game 100-72.

Miller transferred to Virginia Tech in April of 2024, but was dismissed Oct. 23 of that year “due to circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.”

The 6-foot-1 point guard signed with Temple in 2021 after being named Pa.’s 4A State Player of the Year. He started 68 games for the Owls and led the team in scoring in 2024, averaging 15.9 points per game. He was also named 2023 Big 5 Most Improved Player and made the 2023 AAC All-Tournament team.
