5 reasons for optimism for the Los Angeles Chargers after the bye

Despite a tough loss heading into the bye, the Chargers have several reasons to be optimistic as they prepare for the second half of the 2025 season.
Here are five reasons to be optimistic in the final six games of the regular season.
Potential change at left tackle
The Chargers haven’t had success with Austin Deculus and Trevor Penning at left tackle following the season-ending injury to Joe Alt. But it sounds like the solution, who was on the roster all along, may be getting a crack at the starting spot. Last week, head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Jamaree Salyer is an option to start there. Salyer played well there in 2022, when he filled in for the injured Rashawn Slater.
Reinforcements in the running game
Rookie running back Omarion Hampton is expected to have his 21-day practice window opened after the bye, and he could return to game action as early as Week 13 against the Raiders. Hampton has been on injured reserve since suffering an ankle injury in Week 5 against the Commanders. Before his injury, Hampton was highly productive, accumulating 314 rushing yards and two touchdowns and 20 catches for 136 yards in just five games. He and Kimani Vidal should be a nice one-two punch.
Defensive regroup
The defense, while uneven at times, has still played well enough, ranking fourth in total yards and passing yards allowed per game. However, the run defense has been vulnerable. The bye week gives defensive coordinator Jesse Minter time to address the unit’s weakness, which includes utilizing heavier boxes and getting more bodies closer to the line of scrimmage.
Easy opponent next weekend
The Chargers have a very favorable matchup to start building momentum as they face the Raiders (2-8) next Sunday. Los Angeles has defeated Las Vegas in its last three matchups. A win would improve their record and further solidify their playoff position.
Promising playoff position
Despite the loss to the Jaguars heading into the bye, the Chargers are currently still in a good position to make the playoffs with a 7-4 record. They entered the bye week holding the sixth seed in the AFC and have a 64% chance to make the playoffs. A 3-3 record over their final six games would likely be enough to make the playoffs.
