Daniel Brocklebank has opened up on his new job after filming his final Coronation Street scenes.

The 45-year-old actor has played Weatherfield vicar Billy Mayhew since 2014 but it was confirmed earlier this year that the character will be written out of the ITV soap.

He confirmed on Loose Women on Tuesday (November 26) that his final scenes will air “sometime in January” and went on to share his new role.

Daniel told the panel: “So I I left Corrie at quarter to one on the Tuesday afternoon and by half one I was at a theatre in Manchester rehearsing Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein.

The actor appeared on Loose Women on Tuesday, November 25

“It’s the 10th anniversary show and I’m playing young Frankenstein. I’m taking over from the wonderful Ore Ore Oduba.”

Speaking previously to The Mirror, the actor recalled being called into the production office in June and being told the news.

“They said it was purely storyline-based, as is so often the case,” he said. “It felt absolutely right, so I was philosophical about it. It is just a job at the end of the day and there’s no character bigger than the show.

Daniel announced his Corrie exit earlier this year

“We only get a contract for a year at a time and I don’t think anybody in their right mind would expect to be there for life, because I think you’re possibly setting yourself up for a fall.

“Shows evolve and new producers want to bring in new characters and exit characters that they feel have had their time; that’s the nature of it.”

Daniel announced his exit earlier this year, with programme chiefs revealing that his character faces challenges “tested in ways he never imagined” during the coming months, ultimately paving the way for his departure in a closely-guarded storyline.

He said at the time: “”I have been working on Corrie for a quarter of my life. I have adored every minute I have been in that building and have never not looked forward to going into work.

“I love everyone who works on this show and whilst I am sad to be going, I am equally excited to see what the future holds.”

Late last year fans saw Billy lose his husband Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) to motor neurone disease. It’s yet to be revealed how Daniel and his character Billy will leave, and whether Billy will be killed off.

Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
