Tuesday’s EFL predictions
Southampton have taken maximum points from all three of their games under interim manager Tonda Eckert and they look a solid wager to add another win when they face Leicester at St Mary’s.
Eckert was asked to step up from his role as Southampton Under-21’s head coach and has got off to a spectacular start.
The German initially steadied the ship with hard-fought successes away to QPR and at home to Sheffield Wednesday before overseeing a giant leap forward at the weekend when his team won 5-1 away to Charlton.
Eckert’s slick Saints blew Charlton away with four goals in a stunning nine-minute period and they look ready to rack up a victory over Leicester, who are just three points above them in a congested table.
Leicester rose to tenth after Saturday’s 2-1 victory at home to Stoke but they were far from convincing against the highflying Potters, who bossed the expected-goals figures 1.33 to 0.99, the shot count 11-6 and commanded 56 per cent of possession.
The Foxes have won back-to-back games for the first time since August but they are up against a resurgent Saints side and could suffer their fifth league loss of the campaign.
Another club benefiting from a new manager boost are League One strugglers Peterborough, who look overpriced to win their midweek clash at home to promotion-chasing Stevenage.
The Posh have won four matches in a row under Luke Williams, including convincing home league successes over AFC Wimbledon and Stockport.
They looked a supremely confident side against Stockport last Thursday and can do some damage to Stevenage, who arrive at London Road with an opportunity to climb to the top of the table.
Stevenage started the season strongly but they have gone four games without winning and must face their tricky Tuesday night challenge without captain Carl Piergianni, who is serving a one-game ban.
Watford have been making steady progress in the Championship and they can extend their unbeaten run to five by beating Preston at Vicarage Road.
The Hornets came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Derby on Saturday and they should be too strong for North End, who failed to impress in Friday’s 2-1 reverse at home to Blackburn.
