But it will be followed by brighter and drier weather with some sunshine, while the west and north are likely to see some scattered showers.
Thursday will be a mild day, with temperatures ranging from 11 to 15C, however it will turn a little cooler as the rain clears.
Winds might increase to strong and gusty, with near gales developing on western and northwestern coasts.
The coming days will bring a mixture of showers, windy weather at times, with some drier, brighter and calmer weather, Met Éireann has said.
However, it will be chilly to end the week and for the weekend, before turning a little milder early next week.
Met Éireann forecaster Mark Bowe said there are a couple of unsettled and changeable days ahead.
“Now, we have a couple of weather fronts moving over Wednesday and Thursday, with low pressure in charge to finish out the week as well,” he said.
“So, to ease into it, Wednesday’s weather front is going to move over early in the morning, leaving a very cloudy day overall.
“And Thursday sees the front move over during the afternoon, so perhaps a more unsettled day overall, with rain spreading east across the country,” he added.
