There’s no escaping the reality – Liverpool are in a moment of crisis. A 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday has dumped them into the bottom half of the table and virtually killed off any lingering optimism of retaining their Premier League title.

It marked their sixth defeat in seven league matches and a second straight 3-0 embarrassment. To make the situation even worse, Liverpool have fallen behind local rivals Everton, who moved above them on goal difference after their 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Monday night.

The pressure is seriously mounting on Arne Slot, who must reverse the slide quickly. Here, the Echo breaks down the latest Liverpool-related stories.

Slot labelled ‘classless’

Paul Scholes has slammed Slot’s end-of-season getaway to Ibiza as “classless” and “disrespectful,” implying that Liverpool’s recent downfall may be linked to the relaxed environment surrounding the squad at the time.

The Dutch boss caused a stir in May when he was seen in a DJ booth on the Spanish island, even though Liverpool still had two fixtures remaining in the 2024/25 season. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes did not mince his words as he criticised Slot’s actions.

“I think this [Liverpool’s poor form] started towards the end of last season,” the United icon said. “Remember when they won the league? The bad form started. They went away, weren’t they in Ibiza or something? Arne Slot was DJing. Yeah, he was DJing in Ibiza. I think that’s disrespectful. Before the season’s done, I think it’s classless, that.”

Although Scholes avoided directly blaming the Ibiza break for Liverpool’s current problems, he argued that the warning signs were clear in the final stretch of last season and that the Reds failed to take them seriously.

Salah takes a hammering

Liverpool icon Graeme Souness has delivered a scathing assessment of Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian star’s sluggish opening to the campaign. Following a 34-goal haul in all competitions last year, Salah has struggled to hit his stride, managing only three non-penalty league goals so far.

While acknowledging that Liverpool’s issues extend well beyond one player, Souness singled out Salah for “not turning up,” accusing the forward of failing to take responsibility during a period when the team desperately needs leadership.

“I think it’s his brother who has turned up this season,” Souness said on talkSPORT. “I saw an incident in the Community Shield – I’m looking for little signals – he had his back to the sideline and a ball is played up towards the Crystal Palace left-back. He’s not going to win it, he’s not the most physical type, but he could at least go and try and make life difficult for the full-back. He made no attempt to make that challenge.

“He’s shown a lack of appetite. I’m sorry but hard words are sometimes the kindest words and I think he needs hard words and ultimately they’ll get him back to being the superstar that he’s been for Liverpool. This season he has not turned up.”
