‘Far from the case’: Eddie Howe delivers Alexander Isak reality check as PSR change looms

 · 26 November 2025, 20:30

Next season, the Premier League will finally ditch Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and move to Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules, more in line with what UEFA currently employs.

It’s still really a guessing game as to whether Newcastle will be much better off under the new system, but while the current PSR rules remain, Newcastle must still abide by them.

It is becoming clear this season that Newcastle could do with spending more money in January to bolster the squad, as we’re simply not strong enough to compete on all four fronts.

However, the big question is whether Newcastle has the headroom to play with under the current rules.

Isak’s sale didn’t magically fix Newcastle’s budget

Eddie Howe doesn’t believe Newcastle’s PSR position is as healthy as people think it is

You’d expect Newcastle have plenty of money and plenty of PSR headroom after selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for over £125 million in the summer, but Eddie Howe has poured cold water on that when speaking to the media (via The Shields Gazette).

“It’s not my field, so I genuinely don’t really know where we’re at. PSR is always a factor. I understand that the sentiment will be that selling Alex will have solved all of our problems forever, but that’s far from the case.

“It will be ongoing, and while those rules are in place, it will be something that affects us in every window. That will have to be a big consideration for us again.”

Newcastle need to show intent to improve by signing players in January

We still feel there should be enough in the coffers to make at least one major addition to the squad, and given how our season is going, we can’t see Eddie Howe being too happy to sit on his hands and do nothing in January.

Ross Wilson and his team will be assessing targets for January, with AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit heavily rumoured to be a big target for the Magpies.

We just hope that they manage to get someone in. We need to show intent if nothing else.
