Winona Ryder Takes on Spicy Tofu Challenge on Hot Ones

In a recent episode of the popular YouTube show Hot Ones, actress Winona Ryder took on the spicy challenge with an unconventional twist—opting for fried tofu instead of the traditional chicken wings. Known for her extensive filmography, which includes iconic titles such as Heathers, Reality Bites, and Beetlejuice, Ryder also stars in the anticipated fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which premieres on Netflix in the US and UK.
Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans, presents celebrity guests with a series of increasingly spicier chicken wings, or plant-based alternatives. Ryder, known for her love of books and her collaborations with director Tim Burton, revealed her nervousness at the beginning of the episode, stating, “I am terrified. I can’t believe I’m here. I love the show, I love watching.”
Choosing spicy fried tofu over conventional offerings, Ryder faced a unique challenge as she navigated through intense flavors. Noting the tofu’s ability to soak up heat, one YouTube commenter remarked, “Doing tofu with hot sauce is brave.” Despite struggling with the hottest sauces, she successfully completed the challenge, managing the heat by alternating bites of tofu with spoonfuls of ice cream.
During the episode, Ryder also mentioned her co-star Jenna Ortega, who has appeared on the show twice. Ortega, a seasoned vegan, had managed the spiciness with ease, even adding more hot sauce during her segments. Ryder praised her, saying, “I watched Jenna’s. She is a Navy SEAL. I love her so much.”

Interestingly, Ryder’s Stranger Things co-star Sadie Sink was inspired to adopt a vegan lifestyle by another Hot Ones guest, Woody Harrelson. Sink acknowledged the initial intimidation of embracing veganism but encouraged others to treat the transition as a series of small, manageable choices.
As fans eagerly await the new season of Stranger Things, the first four episodes will be released in the US on November 26 and in the UK on November 27. Further episodes will continue to roll out through the holiday season, culminating in the series finale on New Year’s Eve.
