A yellow weather warning has been issued for northern and western parts of the Highlands amid forecasts for 75mph winds.
The warning, which comes into effect at 4pm on Thursday, will remain in place until 11am on Friday.
It covers northern Caithness, northern and western parts of Sutherland, Wester Ross, and Lochaber.
It also covers all of the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Very strong south-westerly winds will develop during Thursday evening, continuing overnight before easing from the west through Friday morning.
“Gusts of 60-70 mph are likely, with a few places perhaps seeing gusts in excess of 75 mph at times.”
Transport, such as ferries, could be impacted by the gales. Passengers are urged to check their sailings are running before they travel.
A CalMac spokesperson said: “Due to forecast strong winds, sailings (from the 10.30am departing Ullapool onward [on Thursday]) are highly liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.”
