Andy Roddick makes feelings clear on potential longevity of Carlos Alcaraz & Jannik Sinner’s era-defining rivalry

Andy Roddick recently touched on the potential longevity of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s rivalry, which is widely regarded as an era-defining one. The rivalry has particularly intensified over the last couple of years, with the Spaniard and the Italian having been the dominant forces at the tennis Majors as well as ATP Tour-level events where they have both played.
Roddick, a former No. 1 and the 2003 US Open champion, believes that if Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner continue to overcome physical and mental issues consistently and keep producing a high level of on-court performances, the rivalry will remain intact for a long time to come.

“This rivalry will not happen quickly. If they’re able to deal with the mental losses, the physicality, all of that and then circle back and also be in peak form a month later again, we’re going to be able to enjoy this one for a while,” Roddick said on a recently-released episode of his ‘Served’ podcast. The recent episode of Andy Roddick’s ‘Served’ podcast mainly revolved around the top 10 tennis matches in 2025 and unsurprisingly, Alcaraz and Sinner’s epic French Open final took the top spot.
“An absolute force of mental anguish, athleticism, drama” – Andy Roddick still in awe of Carlos Alcaraz & Jannik Sinner’s French Open 2025 thriller

Fans of the ‘Served’ podcast voted Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s 2025 Roland Garros final as the year’s best tennis match. The clash, lasting a staggering five hours and 29 minutes, saw Alcaraz coming back from the brink of defeat to conquer Sinner in five thrilling sets. Reflecting on the match on his podcast recently, Andy Roddick only had words of praise for the Spaniard and Italian.
“Everything you could ever want in a match. An absolute force of mental anguish, athleticism, drama… and that’s before we even get to the sportsmanship,” Roddick said.
Prominent tennis journalist Jon Wertheim, who was also a part of the podcast episode, chimed in subsequently. Wertheim highlighted how neither Alcaraz nor Sinner appeared physically hampered despite the overall physicality that both players needed to produce and maintain throughout the contest.
“I don’t recall anyone limping around. It was such a physical match, but it wasn’t to the detriment of the tennis,” Wertheim added.
The latest instalment of the Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner rivalry came in the final of the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. Here, the Italian won in straight sets to defend his title at the prestigious year-end event. However, it was the Spaniard who ended 2025 as the men’s singles World No. 1, with Sinner having to settle for the second spot.
