An IAEA safety assessment mission began at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant following Russia’s attacks on the facility on February 14, 2025, at Ukraine’s request. This was reported by the state-owned enterprise “Chornobyl NPP”.
Experts are assessing whether the site remains safe after a strike drone with an explosive warhead that damaged the outer and inner shells of the New Safe Confinement Arch and other internal structures, components, and systems. The fire that sparked during the attack was extinguished within 10 days.
According to the state-owned enterprise, since the impact, CHNPP specialists have carried out emergency measures aimed at sealing the opening in the arch and reducing the effects of autumn–winter weather on the confinement systems.
“The assessment is being conducted in accordance with Paragraph 2 of the Memorandum of Understanding between the IAEA and the Government of Ukraine, signed on July 10, 2025, in Rome. Under this document, the IAEA provides support for the restoration of the NSC at the Chernobyl NPP”
