Rangers’ Europa League campaign could effectively come to a very early end on Thursday night if they lose to Braga at Ibrox Park.

Bottom of the 36-team league stage with no points from four games, Rangers have had an awful time in Europe  and will expect no favours from a Braga team who have already triumphed in Glasgow this season.

Rangers vs Braga preview

Portuguese side Braga have enjoyed one successful trip to Glasgow this autumn and can double up by winning at Ibrox against Rangers.

Three of their nine points came from a 2-0 win at Celtic on matchday two, and they arrive back in Scotland sitting pretty in fifth place in the standings as they strive to nail down a top-eight place in the Europa League and a bye into the last 16.

Their efforts in Europe contrast markedly to those of Rangers who bowed out of the Champions League qualifiers with three straight losses and have gone on to lose all four assignments in a competition in which they reached the quarter-finals last term.

Danny Rohl has sparked a slight upturn in Rangers’ fortunes since his appointment six weeks ago.

But the ex-Sheffield Wednesday chief has twice tasted defeat in this competition – 3-0 at Brann and 2-0 at home to Roma – and Sunday’s upcoming Premiership showdown with Falkirk is surely of more importance to him now.

Rohl has overseen back-to-back wins but against Dundee and Livingston, the Premiership’s bottom two, and Braga are going to be a step up in class on those two.

Carlos Vicens’ men are bobbing along in mid-division in Portugal and seemingly saving their best stuff for the Europa League in which they have won seven of their last eight having started out in the qualifying rounds.

Gabriel an angel for shot hunters

Braga wide man Gabriel Martinez has scored three times this season, all in the Europa League.

He averages 1.7 shots per game in this competition so should be trusted to get one on target against the Gers.

Take corners to be kept to a minimum

These clubs concede under four corners per game in the Europa League – and Braga ship just 2.6 domestically – so don’t be surprised if they keep the corners down to seven or fewer.

Fran Navarro to have a shot on target

Fran Navarro has scored three goals in the Europa League this season, averages two shots per game in the tournament and can land one on target.

Ricardo Horta to have a shot on target

Seven-goal Ricardo Horta has banged in three goals in his last two games and can also keep Gers keeper Jack Butland on his toes.

Under 3.5 cards

These are well-behaved sides with just 11 cards between them in their collective eight games, so there are no obvious grounds to envisage a bad-tempered affair.

Rangers vs Braga team news and predicted line-ups

Rangers

Defenders John Souttar and Derek Cornelius and forward Mikey Moore headline a major Ibrox absentee list which means Danny Rohl is going to have to be creative.

Predicted line-up (4-2-3-1): Butland; Tavernier, Djiga, Fernandez, Meghoma; Diomande, Raskin; Antman, Aasgaard, Gassama; Danilo.

Subs: Nsiala, Aarons, Rothwell, Barron, Bajrami, Chermiti, Miovski.

Braga

Defender Vitor Carvalho is a doubt for Braga. Joao Moutinho picked up a knock in Sunday’s 4-2 Taca win over Nacional but is fit.

Predicted line-up (3-4-3): Hornicek; Gomez, Lagerbielke, Arrey-Mbi; Martinez, Moutinho, Gorby, Lelo; Navarro, Horta, Zalazar.

Subs: Niakite, Oliveira, Grillitsch, Vidigal, Moscardo, Rodrigues, Ouazzani.
