‘After the Hunt,’ ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,’ and ‘Train Dreams’: What to stream this weekend (Nov. 21–23)

Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts.

After the Hunt (Prime Video): One of the more interesting cases of a movie trying to generate Oscar buzz and falling someone flat with critics is Luca Guadagnino‘s After the Hunt. It takes an approach to telling a #MeToo story that certainly won’t be for everyone, but it’s choices are distinct enough to make a movie worth discussing, which is an achievement in its own right. Also, the trio of actors at the center of it are uniformly stellar.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (VOD): Savvy Oscar predictors will not miss Mary Bronstein‘s acidic and funny take on motherhood, which has a performance from Rose Byrne that could very easily make it into Best Actress next year. It also cannot be understate the degree to which Conan O’Brien is in this movie.

Train Dreams (Netflix): There isn’t enough Joel Edgerton in the world, and if he isn’t directing another sicko thriller like The Gift (which he absolutely should do), at least he’s got a great starring role in what is perhaps Netflix’s strongest awards contender this year.

Megadoc (VOD): Mike Figgis‘ documentary about the making of Francis Ford Coppola‘s Megalopolis, much like its subject, is something so rare that it demands the attention of every serious movie love. The ambitious passion project that cost Coppola an arm and a vineyard got the behind-the-scenes documentary it deserved.
