First Alert Weather Days in effect Saturday & Sunday

  • Snow will develop Saturday afternoon and continue into Sunday
  • Heaviest snowfall will remain along and south of Hwy 29
  • Blowing and drifting of snow likely Sunday

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – First Alert Weather Days have been issued this weekend, due to the potential for moderate to heavy snowfall over parts of central Wisconsin. The heaviest snow will fall mainly Wisconsin Dells to Milwaukee, but slippery travel is expected in north central Wisconsin.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! Mainly cloudy to overcast skies are expected on your Thanksgiving in 2025. Lake effect snow remains possible up in the far Northwoods, but snowfall chances decrease significantly closer to Highway 8. Due to the snowfall from Wednesday and continued gusty winds, snow will continue to blow around and cause limited visibility. Winds could gust as high as around 30-35 MPH on Thursday. This will cause the wind chill to start out in the single digits early before increasing to between 10-15° during the afternoon and early evening.

Friday Forecast(WSAW)

If you will be heading out to go shopping on Black Friday, wind gusts should stay below 20 MPH most of, if not all of, the day. Air temperatures will top out in the low to mid-20s with the wind chill starting in the single digits early. As we warm up with some blue skies and the calmer winds than those of Wednesday and Thanksgiving, wind chill will play less of a role. Clouds will eventually gather late Friday again, leading into our next Weathermaker.

Speaking of our next Weathermaker, A First Alert Weather Day has been declared again for Saturday due to snow. This will continue into early Sunday morning as well.

HOW MUCH SNOW?

Snowfall potential communities will have a chance of getting anywhere from 1-3″ in Wausau, 3-6″ Hwy 10 to Necedah on Saturday into early Sunday. The further south you live, the better of a chance you have for higher snowfall totals. Winds will not blow as strongly as they did on Wednesday or will blow on Thanksgiving, but the combination of the snowfall amounts with the wind we will have Plus all the people that will be traveling back home for the holidays will lead to impacts.

Looking ahead

Blowing and drifting of snowfall will become likely before daybreak Sunday and continue throughout the day. Although, wind gusts will not be as gusty as they were on Wednesday or will be on Thanksgiving.

Heading into next week, expect much colder air temperatures. Both Monday and Tuesday morning next week feature a very realistic shot at some communities experiencing sub-zero temperatures for the first time this season. Snow chances will decrease going into the first half of next week after the travel scene calms down again.
